Best Head Torch UK Reviews

By  Enda McLarnon

Head torches are used by many people and for many activities. Many tradesmen use these for work such as electricians, heating engineers and for general working in any badly lit work places. They are also used by people for walking their dog at night, for hiking and for camping. Many farmers also use these when they have to be out and about on the farm at night.

Head torches have multiple uses and they range in price from around £6-19. The important things to remember when buying them is the amount of light they produce, battery life and charging, and how comfortable they are, when attached to your head.

Below we have included a list of buying tips, and we have also included a top 10 list of head torches, that are currently available on the UK marketplace.

Top 10 Head Torches in the UK

Thanks for taking your time to read our reviews on the best head torch, that is currently available on the United Kingdom market. Just below we have created a top 10 list of head torches, and have listed those by the highest buyer rated.

What is the best head torch?

If you are in a hurry, and don't want to read through a list, then the best head torch in the UK is the Everbeam H6 Pro LED Head Torch. This head has a 650 lumen LED light source that reaches a tested 126 m / 413 ft distance. You wave your hand in front of the lamp to turn it off and on. It offers 10 hours run time.

Advice before Buying a Head Torch

Before spending a penny of your hard earned cash, we strongly recommend having a quick read through our important buying tips just below. It will help a lot with making the perfect buying decision.

How much do head torches cost?

These range in price between £6-£19 depending on the brand that you want, and also the features that you want to have with your head torch. The head torches that sell the most are in the £6-£10 range and are popular with anyone who wants a good quality head torch.

The more expensive ones are aimed at buyers who want a head torch for jogging, cycling, camping etc, and also want one that is fully waterproof and have one or more lights on it.

The word "lumens" is used by torch manufacturers to describe the amount of brightness. The brighter the torch the higher the lumens number will be. Lumen sizes range anything between 50-1,000 lumens. Most head torches are around 150-200 lumens which is the perfect amount of light for most night time use.

If you think you need something brighter, then check out the descriptions in our list below.

Lighting Modes

In their most basic form, these will create a simple white light. Manufacturers have now increased the range of lighting modes to include low, high and flash. Some have extended these further to spotlight, floodlight and red light.

Battery & Battery life

This in our opinion is one of the most important considerations. Some use "AAA batteries.(usually 3)" As these standard batteries are used, the light will reduce in brightness over time, and the batteries will need to be replaced. A pack of 12 "AAA" batteries cost around £6-8 for good quality batteries.

3-5 hours is around the average time that you will get from a set of 3 standard AAA batteries.

This is why many users move to rechargeable batteries.

The vast majority of these use rechargeable batteries. That means you have two key considerations:

  1. How long does the battery last?
  2. How fast are they to charge and how do they charge?

Many manufacturers use rechargeable batteries but don't provide the power adapter charger, so just be aware of that.

Width and Distance

The width and distance of the beam should be a very important consideration for anyone buying a head torch. The distance measurement is simply how far ahead, the light will shine. The width is of course the width ahead that can be lit up.

This is important as the head torch can be used for different purposes. You may want the bean to focus on a particular point if you are working on an item or using it to read. For general purpose use you may want a longer and wider beam.

The basic head torch will have some adjustment available, usually 45 degrees. The head torches with more features will give you much better flexibility when it comes to width and distance. This is typically done by selecting the modes that we have explained above.

The term waterproof is always a bone of contention with buyers. With relation to head torches, when manufacturers use that they really mean rain proof or sweat proof. They are not talking about under water. Products with waterproof claims are measured against what is termed an "IPX Rating."

The IPX Rating System is used to evaluate how resistant products are to environmental conditions.

This rating is used for items such as outdoor speakers, headphones, ear buds, cameras etc.

Most head torches will have an IPX4 rating, but not all do, so be aware of that if it is important to you.

IPX Rating

Resists high-pressure, high-temperature sprays at close range

At the end of the day a head torch sits around your head. You will not want that to be heavy. Most are held on with some form of band. Most of these are very light, so not really a big problem for users. There are however a few classed as "ultra light" and we include those in the descriptions below.

The vast majority of these use an elastic band that is adjustable. With some models, there will also be an over the head strap. The band does need to be adjustable and strong. It also needs to be comfortable to stop it from annoying or irritating you.

Head Torch FAQ

How many lumens do I need for a head torch?

Anything over 150 lumens is going to be a bright light, and ideal for any type of head torch. Some will use 200 lumens and these will be slightly brighter, but in all honesty, not that much brighter.

Why does my head torch have a red light?

The red light on a headlamp is for night vision and will provide some light so you can see. If you are out and about with friends, red light is a lot easier on their eyes, as it is not so bright.

How many lumens do you need for running?

Around 40-50 lumens are perfect for nighttime running on the streets, roads or in a park Some runners prefer to use around 100 lumens as you can always lower them down to a lower setting, and this means the battery will last longer.
